Flying start in 's Hertogenbosch!

This weekend, the Brabanthallen in 's Hertogenbosch will once again be the setting for The Dutch Masters – Indoor Brabant, the first stage of the famous Rolex Grand Slam. The opening day there yesterday was immediately very successful for the Zangerheide horses, because with two victories, twice a second place and also a fifth place, they immediately got off to a flying start!

The start of the show was immediately promising, because during the 1.40m high opening class, the Dutch rider Leopold van Asten immediately secured a blue/yellow victory. He did this with the 9-year-old grey gelding VDL Groep Iron Z, a son of VDL Groep Charisma Z and Mr. Blue which was bred by Stoeterij Duyselshof. Van Asten and VDL Groep Iron Z already won a 1.40m class last month at the Sunshine Tour of Vejer de la Frontera and yesterday were more than half a second ahead of the competition after a clear second phase in 25.37 seconds.

In the 1.45m class it was Van Asten's compatriot Harrie Smolders who became the winner with the 10-year-old chestnut stallion Escape Z, a son of Smolders' former top stallion Emerald van 't Ruytershof and Heartbreaker who was bred by Willem van Hoof and Yvonne Copal and who is also approved for Studbook Zangersheide. In a class against the clock they finished almost four full seconds ahead of the competition.

Second place went to Christian Ahlmann with our 8-year-old stallion d'Aganix 2000 Z, a son of our figureheads Dominator 2000 Z and Aganix du Seigneur Z, who was bred by Tony Foriers. Ahlmann and d'Aganix 2000 Z also performed very well last month with, among other things, a fifth place in a 1.45m class in Opglabbeek and thus confirmed their good form last night.

The French rider Simon Delestre finished fifth in this class with the 11-year-old stallion Tinka's Hero Z (Tinka's Boy x Caretino – B: Vincent Jourdan & Luc Henry), with whom he finished fourth last week in the first leg of the Global Champions League in Doha and seventh in the CSI5* Grand Prix the week before. They also managed to deliver another flawless round yesterday.

But the highlight of the opening day was of course the 1.50m class in which the German rider Daniel Deusser again managed to ensure a top result with his 14-year-old chestnut stallion Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z, a son of Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve and Mr. Blue who was bred by Jonas Belleman. The duo already won a 1.55m class at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington two weeks ago and yesterday only had to tolerate the Swiss rider Martin Fuchs (The Sinner) in front of them after a clear jump-off.
