Contagio Z son Coby 8 wins the CSI5* Grand Prix of Wellington!
A week after the double victory of the American rider McLain Ward and his Contagious, a Contagio Z offspring once again provided fireworks during the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington last night! In the CSI5* Grand Prix it was the German rider Philipp Weishaupt who became the winner with the 12-year-old gelding Coby 8, a son of Contagio Z and this in combination with Escudo I. In a jump-off for which eight of the forty combinations managed to qualify, Weishaupt and Coby 8 were the last to re-enter the ring and beat the competition with a clear round in 40.96 seconds.
Philipp Weishaupt: ““I know how fast my horse is, and after many years of experience I know how quick I have to go to beat the time. That being said, I think all of us are very lucky that Daniel Deusser had the last jump down, because otherwise it would’ve been game over for all of us.”
Because in the jump-off it was indeed the German rider Daniel Deusser who set the fastest time with his 14-year-old chestnut stallion Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Mr. Blue – B: Jonas Bellemans), the former number 1 of the world. Deusser and Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z were the only ones to stay under 40 seconds with a time of 38.50 seconds, but a pole at the last fence meant that they had to be content with the fifth place. For Deusser's Swedish stable mate Petronella Andersson there was an eighth place with the 11-year-old gelding Castres van de Begijnakker Z (Coriano Z x Palestro Vd Begijnakker – B: Ann Keisse).
